Hiring a Karaoke DJ vs. Buying/Renting a Karaoke machine

A Lot of people think hiring a Karaoke DJ/Host is more expensive as opposed to just renting or buying a karaoke machine for their private party.  Some well meaning friends may even try to be helpful by suggesting buying a karaoke machine to save money rather than hiring a dj. It may sound like a practical idea.  But before fishing for that wallet and making that purchase .....there are a few things to consider.

A great karaoke dj will have a very expansive selection in his/her karaoke library.  This is to be able to cater to your guests, whether their age is still a single digit or two.....people both young and old.  Renting or buying a karaoke machine is only the beginning.  Will you buy or rent CD's also?  What kind of CDG's will be provided?  Who's going to operate that machine?  Your niece or nephew? Or are you going to handle it yourself?

If you decide to use your own CDG's, then your guests will be limited only to your music preferences, or if you're renting....the karaoke library may not have big band swing, old country, new country, oldies, classic rock, new rock, soft rock, hard rock, hip hop for your guests to have a wide array to choose from.  Remember...one thing that is fun about karaoke is trying out songs that you never sung before.  A little familiar with maybe....but the fun is trying it out to see if you'll be able to "wing it".  And if you decide to buy more CDG', the cost to cater to most of your guests will be very expensive.

What about safety?  If you rent that machine....and one of your inebriated guests spill his drink or trip and damage the rental?  If it's your own system, maybe you won't sweat that much....although you will feel kind of a pinch when you realize you don't have a karaoke machine anymore, and to get it fixed or buy a new one will be more dollars out of your pocket.

If you want optimal enjoyment, you would want the music and your guests to sound great when they're singing.  If they're using your TV as your sole speakers....they won't be heard above the hubbub of noise or you'll blow the TV speakers out and everyone will sound terrible.  If you want to rent the rest of the equipment....Do you know where to get speakers, amplifiers, mics, mixers?  There are many rental companies out there...the question is how much will it cost you?

In most cases, you must provide a truck or van to transport the equipment. Now, do you know how to set these things up? Do you know the difference between a mini plug, an rca plug, a quarter inch and an XLR plug? Do you know the difference between the gain control and the volume control on a mixing board? If not, will the rental company give you a tutorial?

Maybe the rental companies will go over the procedure with you, step by step when you pick the equipment up, but make sure you have a recorder or pen and paper to take notes, because if you have to call them later they will likely charge you for a service call. I know rental companies will deliver, setup, and test their equipment as well as pick up later, but all of this costs extra.

After all that and let's say you do decide to still be a "do it yourselfer"....and you think you have taken the adequate measures to avoid accidents (which do happen despite careful planning) and you have a large enough karaoke library to make sure everyone gets to sing the song of their choice, and you were able to obtain a decent sound system, and you got "Junior" to operate everything, (without you having to run back and forth because he forgot how to change the key or add echo in the mics)...and will still save more money than hiring a Karaoke DJ service, then by all means use your system....you really have no need for a Karaoke host/DJ.

Spare yourself the headache and the hassle.  Hiring a Professional DJ/Karaoke service will allow you to have fun with your guests and will probably cost just a few bucks more for this hassle free enjoyment. A good Karaoke DJ will take care of any hiccups during the party and will be taken care of quickly, smooth flowing music (both karaoke & DJ) so your non-singing guests can dance too.  And  you don’t have to worry about returning or packing up heavy equipment while you still have the leftovers and garbage to take care of after your party.

Be Entertained …Every time!
